the_volume is a duo of Alexander Chilmakov (acoustic
guitar) and Denis Kolokol (voice, computer). The musicians
met in Almaty in 2004, and for long time were both
involved in creative works as activists of [antiparty
gang] group. The trio of Chikmakov, Kolokol and Konstantin
Timoshenko took part in the international festival for
experimental media-art REPLICA (2006, Almaty KZ). After
the festival Timoshenko left the group, and Chikmakov and
Kolokol started to develop their own interpretation of
abstract improvisational music. The first presentation of
the duo's works occured on REPLICA 2007 festival in
Almaty. In the beginning of 2008 Denis Kolokol left for
Kraków PL to the residence in the
Electroacoustic Music Studio (SME) in the Academy of Music
in Kraków (thanks to NCK for the grant Gaude
Polonia). After completing the residence the duo started
to implement new conception - at the moment the_volume is
focused more on interactive works for guitar and
electronics, as well as on the algorhytmic composition.
The main idea of the duo's music is to
erase borders between electronic and acoustic instruments.
And that is a fascinating affair if to take into consideration
Chikmakov's background in jazz-rock, cubano, and tango nuevo,
and Kolokol's main interest in Neue Musik, free
improvisation and radical avant-garde.
the_volume's first CD is expected in 2009.
